Halloween Movie Quotes for Digital Marketers

It’s that time of year again! This year we’ve put our spooky minds together to rewrite some of our favourite Halloween movie taglines…with a digital marketing twist, of course.

IT (2017)

 “We all bounce down here.
You’ll bounce too!”

What non-digital marketers may not know, is that bounces (users who view a single page without taking an action) are a very common behavioural pattern on websites. In other words: we all bounce. For example, did you know that an average website has a bounce rate of 41% – 51%?

Jaws (1975)

“You’re going to need a bigger budget.”

Although this is meant to be tongue and cheek, budget increase requests are probably one of the most difficult conversations digital marketers have to have with business owners.

This is a common recommendation Google Ads makes, even if the algorithm doesn’t predict it will improve performance by much. For example, it is not uncommon to see: “increase your budget by $1,000 for +1 clicks/week.” – Terrifying!

Budget increases need to be well thought out with a strategy for increasing the number and quality of leads.

Orphan (2009)

“There’s something wrong with your sitemap.”

A very scary scenario for digital marketers and web designers alike: sitemap errors! Some common sitemap nightmares we have encountered include:

  • Submitted URL not found (404)
  • Submitted page blocked by robots
  • Submitted URL marked as ‘noindex’
  • Too many URLs in the sitemap

The Sixth Sense (1999)

“I see dead links.”

Dead links are like ghosts: they remind us of those who are no longer with us. Or, in this case, pages that have been deleted or moved. If you see deadlinks, it’s important to redirect the page it was linking to and replace the link with one that is actually alive.

The Exorcist (1973)

“What an excellent day for an algorithm update.”

If we had a dime for every time Google sprung an algorithm update on us…well, we’ll let you do the math: we’ve seen 13 updates (so far) in 2022, 16 updates in 2021, and 12 updates in 2020. Truly every digital marketer’s worst nightmare!

The Shining (1980)

“Heeeeeeeres’
The HELLpful Content Update.”

Speaking of updates: In case you’ve been hiding under a rock, Google released the Helpful Content Update in August 2022, which devalues Search-Engine First content and prioritizes ranking content that promotes authentic and expert voices on the search results page. What was ultra-spooky about this update is that Google had only given website owners just a week’s notice that the update was coming, which surely sent many into a panic about the potential negative impacts it could cause. However, it doesn’t seem that the update was as scary as we had anticipated and was relatively small for our client websites compared to the algorithm updates we have seen in the past. Talk about anticlimactic!
